What is art?

There are so many intricate levels to Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” including whether or not it is actually a film by Banksy, whether it’s fact or fiction, whether Mr. Brainwash is “real,” and the list goes on….
It is a fascinating film.
It asks us all to think about what art is, who we are as a society, how we create celebrity, and how we endow things with meaning.
My husband and I have been fans of “Mr. Brainwash’s” art ever since we moved to LA and often photograph his pieces when we are exploring the city. It wasn’t until we saw “Exit Through the Gift Shop” that we put it all together and realized they were his pieces all along.
The day after seeing the movie we decided to go on a hunt to find more of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Mr. Brainwash’s work. To our surprise, at our first stop at Pico/La Brea was Mr. Brainwash. He was very sweet and gave us a bunch of posters which now hang in our apartment.
This is definitely one of my favorite “LA moments” and I’m looking forward to seeing what pieces he creates next. I’d also love to see more of the female street artists come to the forefront: Swoon, Lady Pink, and Miss 17 etc… I can’t wait to see where this movement goes next because I am hooked and excited for the ride. Plus, it kind of makes me want to be a street artist…seriously…
